Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain

“To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in the sight of My God. 3 So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. 4 But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ (Revelation 3: 1- 6)

When Jesus addressed the seven lampstand churches He came revealing a certain expression of Himself that was unique to the need in each place. Sardis is described by Jesus as a people who are falling asleep spiritually.

Standing with the Truth

“Jesus said to him (Thomas), I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)

Our theme today is, ‘Standing with the truth.’ What are you standing with today, the truth or a lie? Maybe you don’t even know the difference between the two such has become ‘the grey area’ that many people live in today. ‘What is truth, you may even ask? Pilate, the Roman governor who washed his hands of complicity in Jesus’ death asked that very question of Jesus. (John 18:38) I believe this is a question all of us ask at some point in our lives.

the flow of oil

And he said to me, “What do you see?” So I said, “I am looking, and there is a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the stand seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps. Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left.” (Zechariah 4:2-3 NKJV)

Here we have the picture of the lampstand receiving the supply of oil from above. Just as the light shone in the tabernacle from the lampstand and that lampstand needed daily oil supplied to it, so in our time the light is to shine from the lampstand church. Remember that the light could only shine because of the connection to the oil from above.

The Church of Laodicea

The church in Laodicea is the last of the seven churches to be addressed by Jesus. Dispensationally (a period of time) Laodicea is typical of the church condition in the last days. They said of themselves, ‘we are rich and have become wealthy and have need of nothing’. They had come to a place of ease, and self-sufficiency, and independence, a place where they were comfortable.

Absolute Truth

Modern society prides itself on free thinking; promoting self-interpretation, self-definition, self-expression, and selfdetermination. This climate of free thinking leads to the denial of truth. What is truth when everyone’s idea of their own reality is sourced in themselves? Central to this modem philosophy is the denial and rejection of any absolute truth concerning God. The world says, you can believe if you like, but because there is no absolute truth concerning God, you decide for yourself if He is real.
