Nothing is impossible with God

“For nothing will be impossible with God. And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word”. (Luke 1:37-38)

We would all agree, based on the depth of information given, that the birth of Jesus Christ was a great miracle. It took place without Mary having had relations with any man. How did this miracle come about? God in His wisdom decreed to do it in a way which included the participation of mankind. By divine appointment, Mary participated in the greatest miracle of all; God becoming flesh, Immanuel, God with us. This participation of mankind in God’s very own work reveals the love of the Godhead to include and gather us up into His will. But how do we participate? Well, God speaks to us; He brings to each one of us a specific word. The word of the Lord to Mary was the seed of God’s naming and work for her in her life. She was to be a mother, and in particular she was to be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. Mary’s response to this word that came to her though is all important. Mary offered herself in love to be the Lord’s bondslave and was immediately obedient to the word brought to her by the messenger Gabriel who was sent from God. Gabriel indeed found Mary to be a worthy house (Matt 10:11-14) and to be good ground in which the fruit of God’s will could grow. (Matt 13:23) This word from God to Mary caused faith to rise in her heart and she joined the faith of God. She believed for her life what God believed for her. And we are told that she was blessed because she believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord. (Luke1:45) What an amazing example of faith Mary’s response to God’s word has been to every generation. I’m sure that as time went on and Mary took her place as a mother in the Body of Christ, this was the response she continued to mother toward others, that they too would find their own particular miracle. Miracles occur when we too can say to the Lord like Mary did, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” The power and authority of the miracle is not in ourselves but in God’s word that is spoken, for nothing is impossible to God when we believe the word He speaks to us.
