Be drawn by the Father
“No one can come to me (Jesus, the Son) unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day… Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.” John 6:44-45
In these verses Jesus talks about the Father drawing us to Himself. I have found it very interesting that Jesus says we can’t come to Him unless we are drawn by the Father. What does this mean? Contained in the seed that is Christ’s sonship is the seed or word of all our sonship. Jesus is the seed and firstborn of what the bible calls, ‘new creation’. Jesus said in John 12:24, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel (seed, grain) of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” Many seeds or many sons has always been the will of the Godhead (Heb 2:10-12) The word ‘draw’ that is used to describe the activity of the Father in bringing us to His Son is used metaphorically to signify, ‘drawing by inward power or divine impulse.’ (Vines Expos. Dict.) It is like we receive an illumination or a conviction that there is much more to life than just merely existing and surviving. An awakening within our innermost being begins to take place. We become aware of something more. Something spiritual. That there is a truth to our existence here on earth. What is that truth and where can we find it becomes the burning question? This impulse, this conviction, this stirring, this awakening to what is truth, is I believe, the drawing of the Father. The Father in heaven is working to reveal to us the name of our sonship. In drawing us to The Son, Jesus Christ, the Father is drawing us to our eternal sonship that is found only in Him. Jesus is the firstborn seed that contains the seed of all our sonship. (Rom 8:29) We cannot truly know ourselves apart from truly knowing Him. Unless we come to Christ we are lost to Him and He (and therefore our sonship in Him) is lost to us. When you are being drawn you want to be right where the word of His fellowship is and where the fellowship of His word is. We are not being forced to respond to Christ but rather we are being drawn by the Father. May we not neglect or reject the drawing of His love but instead run after it. (S of S 1:4 –KJ) “The Lord appeared to us from afar saying: I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving kindness.” (Jer 31:3)
