Going with the flow?

Have you ever heard or made the comment, ‘I just went with the flow.’ I’m sure we all have. If so we need to stop and consider where ‘the flow’ is taking us and ask, “What is its impact on others?” If ‘the flow’ is not the mind of Christ at that point, and we succumb to it, then we are in grave danger of drifting away from the Lord. Often we don’t mean to end up where we do; we didn’t deliberately set out or plan to go astray.

the firm foundation of Jesus Christ

“Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who names the name of God is to abstain from wickedness. (unrighteousness)” (2 Timothy 2:19)

This statement by Paul about the firm foundation of God that stands is uttered in the context of Paul warning the church about two men, Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have gone astray from the truth and are now upsetting the faith of some. Now we know that the firm foundation of all true faith is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Rock and upon no other foundation is the church to be built. (1 Cor 3:11) I would suggest therefore that if anyone goes astray from the teachings of Jesus then quite clearly they are no longer living their lives built upon the firm foundation of Jesus Christ.

Laying a sure foundation

“For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)

What we build in life is only as good as the foundation upon which we build. Therefore it is imperative that before we build that we make sure we lay a proper foundation. Of course we know this to be true before we embark upon building a house or any other physical building. If we don’t lay a proper and secure foundation then when a storm beats against the house then more than likely the house will collapse. This was the case in the parable Jesus told of the wise and foolish builders.

Overcome Laziness

“The slothful (lazy) man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.” (Proverbs 26:13)

Often we see the obstacle that stands in the way rather than the opportunity and the victory that is there for us in God. If we always focus on the ‘lion in the way’ then we will never achieve what God wants us to achieve. To the lazy person there is always a reason or an excuse as to why they can’t do what they know they can and should do. The spiritually lazy person in scripture is one who lacks any motivation in regards to the word of God spoken to their life.

I am making all things new

And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” (Rev 21:5 NASB)

Almost fortnightly, for the past 10 years I’ve driven over Lake Eildon at Bonnie Doon, on my way to Melbourne, and seen no water. As each season passed, and seeing nothing change, I was heard to say on many occasions ‘it will never fill again!’ Amazingly, over the past 18-24 months, the lake has started to fill. As I’ve seen each ‘new high point’ I’ve been amazed but still thought ‘that’s as high as it will go’. Incredibly, in a trip to Melbourne several months before Christmas, I saw the lake 100% full!
